Back in the mid-2000s, before Facebook came along and swept everyone off their feet with its easy-to-use timeline and myriad baby pictures, MySpace was the reigning social network. Of course, MySpace failed to adapt with the times, and now Tom is sitting in a corner somewhere, crying himself to sleep. But not for long, because the site’s new owners just announced that they will re-launch a brand new MySpace later this year. From TheVerge.com:
They've partnered with Justin Timberlake on the new endeavor, who they say has helped focus the site as a platform that artists can use to promote and build their own brands in a single, unified location. While specific details on the new site are light, it is currently undergoing internal beta testing by MySpace employees, and will be rolling out to artists — followed by the general public — later in the year. While it's still unclear if the new MySpace will help bring the brand back to prominence, the efforts of the Vanderhooks do appear to be taking things in the right direction. In February it was revealed that the site was acquiring 40,000 new sign-ups per day — up from zero — and the brothers told Forbes that the site's unique visitor count is currently at 30 million per month and climbing.
You know how some people still prefer to listen to music on vinyl? Maybe MySpace can be the vinyl of social networking. Their users can talk about how status updates on MySpace sound warmer than they do on Facebook, or how the cracks in the coding make it feel more real. Then again, MySpace might end up as the "Beverly Hills 90210" of social networks, coming back for a second run even though no one was asking for it.
