Investigators in Whitley County say a man managed to take a gun away from a 17-year-old runaway who shot him during an attempted carjacking Sunday.
Dispatchers received a call Sunday morning from the man, who told them he’d been shot in his car and was holding the suspect at gunpoint.
When investigators arrived, they found the man had been shot in the chest. He went to an area hospital for treatment; police took 17-year-old Dakota Kimbler—a runaway from a juvenile facility called Pierceton Woods—into custody. Investigators said Kimbler ran away from the facility Saturday night.
During interviews, the shooting victim told police he finished his shift at work, got into his car and started driving home. He began to think that someone was in the backseat and turned around to confront the assailant. At this point, he told police, Kimbler shot him in the chest. The man took the gun away from the teenager and held him until help arrived.
Investigators said Kimbler is at the Whitley County Jail on a preliminary charge of attempted murder. He could be charged as an adult, although that decision has not been made.
