Recognizing trouble
Rarely, you run into more serious stomach issues. They make themselves known by where the pain is, how long it lasts, and how intense it is.
Make sure that you call your health care provider if
- Your child’s stomachache lasts longer than usual
- The stomachache is paired with a high fever
- Your child is in a lot of pain
- If the pain starts anywhere other than the middle of your child’s belly or if the pain moves
In a typical tummy ache, pain starts and stays in the middle of the belly. You might be dealing with a more serious problem if your child complains of
- Pain that moves to the lower right part of the belly. This kind of pain is the hallmark of appendicitis.
- Pain on the high right side of the belly, which can mean gallbladder trouble.
- Lower-back pain that radiates to his or her stomach area, which often indicates kidney problems, like urinary tract infections or kidney stones.
If your child’s pain sounds like one of the above, call your health care provider. If your child’s pain is severe, take him or her to the emergency room.
Addressing stress
Stress is most often behind a stomachache that is uncomfortable but not painful and stays in the middle of your child’s belly.
Almost anything could be at the root of a stress-induced stomachache. If your child becomes concerned about something going on at school, worries about an upcoming competition, or is going through a tough time with friends, that stress can take shape as a stomachache.
You treat that type of tummy trouble with rest and reassurance — a few caresses, some time on the sofa, and offering to listen can do more than any medication.
Could be constipation
Like most tummy aches, constipation often shows up as discomfort in the middle of the belly. It may also cause severe pain, nausea, and even vomiting.
Younger children especially may experience constipation for a host of reasons, like getting too caught up in play to stop and use the bathroom, feeling embarrassed when needing to use the bathroom, or changes of diet.
