Sports Illustrated has a new cover boy. It wasn't really supposed to go like this, but the doubters have become believers in a team that never gave up on itself.
Use any sports cliché you want but this has been a Cinderella season for the Indianapolis Colts, playing one game at time for their coach fighting cancer, staying Chuckstrong when the chips were down.
“I mean it’s just a great story,” said sports radio personality JMV with 1070 The Fan.
Now, rookie quarterback Andrew Luck is on the cover of Sports Illustrated.
“It's about time,” JMV said. “It's a little bit of recognition for a team I think people up until this point I think maybe nationally didn't have a great deal of belief in. But now at 7 and 4 and really in control of their own destiny when it comes to the post season you have to take notice.”
Luck's jersey is on the NFL’s top ten most popular list and Sports Illustrated says luck has done a good job of transitioning Indianapolis fans from the Peyton Manning era into a successful rookie run with a hopeful future.
“That's pretty awesome,” said Colts Grille General Manager Michael Duganier.
“It's pretty amazing,” Duganier said. “The season has been a blessing and the fact that Sports Illustrated has focused on Indiana as a whole with Notre Dame being number one, IU being number one, now the Colts are relevant and playoff bound hopefully.”
And the Colts have a new cover boy. The last time a Colts player ended up on the cover was November 16, 2009. No surprise here—the featured player was Peyton Manning.
