For the first time in eight years, a survey said Hoosiers feel safer at home, especially downtown.
An IUPUI Quality-of-life survey found 34.3 percent of Hoosiers, this year, felt “very safe." The survey does not suggest people feel unsafe.
“This is the first year that we’re beginning to see a change in the trend. All of a sudden, now, residents feel much safer to be downtown,” said Dr. Sotiris Hji-Avgoustis; Tourism, Conventions and Event Management Professor.
Professor Hji-Avgoustis said people felt safer during the day as well as during the night.
The survey began in 2004. Every year, about 400 Hoosiers are surveyed. People were surveyed while they attended cultural events. Two years ago, they started surveying people who were at sporting events. The people have lived in Indianapolis for about 10 years.
“I’ve always thought it was a clean, great downtown area to come to. So when I come, I like it,” Tina Miles said.
Hji-Avgoustis said people’s opinions shifted for a reason.
“I think it’s because of some of the major events that took place. The Super Bowl had a big impact on this,” Hji-Avgoustis said.
His prediction is this trend will continue, as long as major events continue coming here.
“That’s a way to attract people downtown and once they go downtown, they realize that it’s not as bad as they thought it would be,” Hji-Avgoustis said.
