Valentin Duran, 25, has been charged with a number of counts related to child neglect and drag racing following an accident Saturday.
“When he hit the ground, his car was sliding sideways and he just slammed me real hard,” said Edith Johnson, who was hurt in the accident.
Duran’s 2-year-old son was rushed to the hospital with collapsed lungs and cuts to his head and legs. The boy was sitting in the front seat without a seatbelt.
“This is a prime example of how dangerous it can be in a car for a child,” IMPD Officer Mike Hewitt said.
Police urged drivers to pay attention and always alert someone if a child in another car looks to be restrained improperly.
The investigation also revealed that Duran has never had a driver’s license and has had prior run-ins with police related to driving.
Police are still looking for a black Mustang with temporary plates and dark, tinted windows that was racing Duran. The car would likely have front end damage, Hewitt said.
Johnson said she was glad that no one died in the accident and that she was now scared to get back on the road.
“I'm a little nervous. I think we all could’ve died yesterday,” Johnson said.
