Much of Western, Northern, and Interior Alaska sees Wind Chill advisories or warning in effect today. Widespread wind chills from 15 to 40 below are expected, with wind chills in areas of the northern Interior and North Slope dropping to 75 below.
Air temperatures will range from 15 to 50 below.
These are very dangerous winds and temperatures. All skin should be covered to prevent frostbite. Remember that wind chill values are not actual air temperatures but rather, indicate what the air feels like to the body and therefore, how the body is impacted.
While it will retreat to the north a bit by Friday, bitterly cold temperatures will persist through the weekend.
Weak low pressure remains over the Gulf of Alaska. Rain is likely for the southern Panhandle with snow for the rest of SE and coastal Southcentral. Heaviest accumulations will be found in the northern Panhandle, where Juneau and Skagway will see nearly a foot through tonight. Seward and Cordova stand the best chance of accumulating snow in Southcentral.
Weather will be quiet in Anchorage and the Valley. Highs will top in the single digts to low teens with breezes lowering wind chills below zero. Cold tonight---0 to 15 below. Even colder air Wednesday with 1 to 3 inches of snow likely Wednesday night and Thursday.
