This has been a gloomy week for most the Alaska. Fortunately, warmer temperatures and sunshine is re-emerging for parts of the state. Places like Fairbanks, McGrath, Bethel and Denali Park will see a fair dose of sun and temps in the 60s to near 70.
Not everyone is done with the wet weather, however.
From the northern Panhandle into PWS. rain is likely with 24 hour totals surpassing one inch. Breezy to windy conditions, particularly through channeled terrain, will accompany the rain. Scattered showers will persist another day Bristol Bay and the Alaska Peninsula, also.
So, why the drying in some areas and the soaking rains in others?
The slow moving low over the Bering Sea that has plagued us with cool, wet weather is weakening and moving into the Gulf of Alaska, just south of Kodiak. The circulation around this upper low is not as broad as past days, so less of the state will have cloud cover. While a moist jet is advecting moisture into coastal Southcentral, warm and dry air is being advected in from Canada through the Interior and into Southwest. As the low tracks to the south, pockets of sunshine will emerge from most of southern Alaska later today and tomorrow. Anchorage highs will pop back into the 60s tomorrow.
However, as the jet at the leading edge of the trough strengthens, it will re-intensify the low and yank it to the north this weekend. This means more overcast and cool weather with widespread rain chances through the weekend for Southcentral.
The southern Panhandle and eastern Aleutians will remain dominated by weak ridging and partial sunshine today and tomorrow.
