A big storm system and associated front walloped the West last night with blizzard conditions, strong winds and rain.  This morning, the front is making a slow track to the east and by tonight, heavy precipitation and gusty winds become likely for us in Southcentral.

Snow is changing or has already changed to rain in Southwest AK thanks to the frontal passage and warm air riding northward along a potent upper level jet.  The dry slot is punching up into the Bristol Bay region is morning so expect some brief drying before rain showers increase again this afternoon.  Winds will decrease through the day, as well.

As the jet shifts to the east, copious mid and low level moisture and strong dynamical forcing will provide periods of heavy rain and snow for PWS.  Winds will gust through channeled terrain to 65 mph, with the strongest gusts though Turnagain Arm.  Blizzard conditions may exist for a time later this evening and tonight down the Turnagain Arm.

Downsloping winds mean only light snow for Anchorage and the Valley today with breezy to windy conditions.  But, as the winds subside somewhat tonight and the front pushes through, snow will become more likely.  Expect 2 to 4 inches in town through tomorrow with higher amounts along the mountains.

Temperatures will be in the 20s and 30s but are not expected to soar into the 40s as they did with the last storm.

There are several warning and advisories for inclement weather today and tonight around the state and more are likely to come.  Please keep abreast of any new updates on ktuu.com and on our Facebook page.
