A broad stacked low pressure system south of Kodiak Island is responsible for gray skies and areas of persistent rain over southern Alaska.
Some of the heavier rain has been in PWS and the eastern Kenai. Gusty winds in excess of 50 mph through channeled terrain have accompanied the wet weather. Rain will continue today with highs in the upper 40s to low 50s.
Rain and rain showers will continue in SE, also. Look for highs in the 50s. Rain will intensify late this morning as another wave of energy associated with a frontal boundary moves onshore.
Wrap-around moisture is bringing cold rain showers to the Bristol Bay region and Kodiak. Highs will stay in the 40s and low 50s from Dillingham eastward.
Sunshine is breaking out in the lower Kuskokwim and much of the western Interior, so temps will likely climb into the 60s today.
Stubborn status clouds and patchy fog will keep temps in the 40s out over the Aleutians in response to a building ridge of high pressure.
The sunniest and warmest area of the state will be the western and northern Interior. Fort Yukon, Fairbanks, Bettles, and McGrath will all warm into the upper 60s with an isolated shower or thunderstorm developing this afternoon along a thermal trough axis draped over the region.
Downsloping will almost entirely prevent rainfall in Anchorage and the Valley, but the cloud cover will be widespread. Highs will stay in the low to mid 50s the next couple of days with a few light showers or sprinkles possible tonight and tomorrow. As the upper level disturbance dissipates, a ridge over western Alaska will increase our prospects of sunshine and 60s this weekend.
