Today will be cold and relatively calm for Southcentral, but we won't be able to say that tonight.
Winds will increase from the north this evening and continue into Thursday morning before diminishing. Gusts will approach 50 mph in the Mat Su, near 45 mph in west Anchorage, and near 75 mph throughout PWS. Wind chills will drop as the winds pick up to -40 below along the upper Susitna. Expect wind chills as low as -20 in west Anchorage. Winds will be lighter in east Anchorage, in particular, along the Hillside.
Meanwhile, a surface low will develop over SW Alaska later today then move into the northern Gulf. Snow will become heavy out ahead of this low in the Panhandle with an additional foot likely near Juneau. Rain and snow can be expected for the outer islands of SE.
The Interior will see temps drop to -45 over the next couple mornings. Highs will stay well below zero. There could be patchy areas of ice fog today.
Bundle up! These wind chills are dangerous to exposed skin. Residents in PWS, west Anchorage, the Mat Su, and near Cook Inlet should be prepared for very cold wind chills through Thursday.
