Uncomfortably cold weather is back for nearly all of the mainland today. Highs will generally range from 15 to 50 below for the Interior and west, with highs from 15 to -5 for Southcentral. Wind chills will approach 75 below in the Prudhoe Bay area, 45 below around Bristol Bay, and somewhere in between for the Interior.
Warmer air and snow showers remain for Southeast. 1 to 3 inches is expected with temps in the 20s and 30s.
Change is (thankfully) coming. The upper level flow is going to flatten out, allowing a more zonal flow and the retreat of the arctic air mass to the north. A storm system will move into the Aleutians tonight, weaken, then continue its march up the Alaska Peninsula and into Southcentral by Sunday. This storm brings the promise of warmer air and the threat of snow.
Highs will remain near or below zero in Anchorage and the Valley through tomorrow. Throughout the day Sunday, you will begin to notice the warm up. Highs will be in the low teens Sunday, with temps continuing to climb overnight and into Monday. Expect highs to reach toward 20 degrees Monday.
That's a 20 to 25 degree warm up from where we are now. Won't that feel nice?
