Spring Is So Fleeting

Spring is so fleeting in much of Alaska, and for many northern zones of the Lower 48. There is always great anticipation because winters are so long, so dark and so cold.

Sunny Sky and Cooler Temps Continue

It can be frustrating to still see a thick blanket of snow on the Chugach Mountains and big heaps of ugly ice in parking lots around Anchorage, but we are getting closer and closer to the period of green grass and pretty flowers.

Sometimes Things Aren't As They Seem

After about 6 months of cold and snow, many were ready when April arrived for the spring season to officially get underway. Sometimes Mother Nature has a different idea, AND maybe "she" knows best after all.

City Street Becomes a Duck Pond

The recent meltdown of snow has created numerous issues. The thaw-and-freeze cycle breaks up asphalt, so the potholes are getting larger. Water is "ponding" because there is no place for the runoff to go.

We've Turned The Corner

Easter Weekend turned into a great wrap-up to March, a month with just over 20 inches of snow and what seemed like a major setback with much of that total fallling just one week ago. Despite dense fog Sunday morning, temps warmed nicely and the meltdown ensued. It became nice enough in the afternoon for some to even wear shorts and t-shirts, if out for a short time.

A large low and rigorous upper trough have brought clouds and rain to all of Alaska. Situated near the west coast, this 997 mb low is weakening and moving to the northeast as the trough lifts over the state. Until it clear the area late tonight, showers remain likely, with some heavy showers possible.

A deep low pressure system has stalled out over eastern Russia. A frontal boundary is located over far NW Alaska. Rain, some of it heavy, has spread into Nome, Kotzebue, St. Lawrence Island and Wainwright. Winds will be strong near the front with gusts over 50 mph possible. The rawest conditions will be in the Chukchi Sea and Bering Strait. The low will remain stationary until Thursday night, so expect wet and windy weather until then.

Two main upper level features remain over the state. One upper low is centered near McGrath while another is weakening as it moves over the Aleutians. The combination of these is maintaining a southerly flow aloft over the mainland, with clouds and scattered showers continuing within this moist flow.

A stubborn status layer was once again observed overnight and this morning in Interior and Southcentral AK. This low cloud deck is breaking apart as the sun's influence becomes stronger. As pockets of sun get through to the surface, thermal mixing will further aid in breaking up the clouds. By tomorrow, a dry northerly flow aloft will develop and bring the promise of more sunshine and even warmer temps.

A ridge of high pressure is strengthening over the Gulf of Alaska. It will nudge into southern Alaska as the day goes on. While cool, moist air will endure through most of the morning, it will gradually be overtaken by the drier air and sunshine will begin to pop over much of the state's southern half.

Rain continues to pound PWS thanks to a strong low located near Nunivak Island and a strong jet pushing rich moisture onshore into PWS. This flow will taper off tonight, but not until dropping a couple of inches of rain.

Yesterday, I wrote about dry air that would push into Anchorage and the Valley last night and this morning. If you'll remember, I also wrote, "this will bring us brief clearing. The sunshine will be short-lived."

An upper low remains over southern Alaska. Strong, jet flow ahead of the low brought heavy rain to SE yesterday and overnight. The jet has cleared the area but showers near the low center will continue for central and northern Panhandle. The southern end will have partly cloudy skies and drier weather.

There are two areas of concern across the state. The west coast has seen rain all morning. West of Nome and into Southwest Alaska, rain will continue throughout the day. The other part of the state seeing too much water is the central and eastern Interior. Bands of heavy rain have been observed, leading to flooding worries. More on that in a bit.

An upper level trough over NE Alaska is digging across the rest of the state. Rain has been slowly spreading southward over the Interior into SW and Southcentral. This is a slow-moving feature---as a result, expect cloudy and wet weather to persist for all areas of the state except the northern Interior and Aleutians.

An easterly wave and weak surface low pressure over the state will provide us with another round of wet weather in Southcentral today. Upper level winds out of the SE Panhandle will continue to stream moisture through Southcentral and the southern Interior. Showers will increase this morning and become more widespread by afternoon.

Moisture riding along an upper level easterly wave is bringing rain and rain showers to the eastern mainland. Clouds broke earlier in SE and should remain broken with dry weather there throughout the day. However, further west in Southcentral and the eastern Interior, clouds and showers continue to march W/NW. They will bring an end to the sunshine over the western Interior this afternoon and to Southwest this evening.

A broad upper trough remains over Alaska with a couple of lows rotating through the trough. While the primary of these lows near Kodiak is weakening, mostly cloudy conditions are still likely for most of southern Alaska. Another weak low is moving north toward the SE Panhandle. To the west of the trough is a weak ridge. East of the ridge axis over the Bering Sea and far western Alaska, dry, sunny and cool weather is expected today.

Anchorage and the Valley are benefiting from the effects of downsloping flow. While most of the southern half of the state remains cloudy to mostly cloudy with rain showers, we have cleared beautifully this morning and already warmed into the 50s. I did not expect as rapid and widespread of clearing, especially during the morning, but we have lucked out. As a result, highs will push toward 60 in the Mat Su and upper 50s in the Anchorage Bowl.

A relatively dry northerly flow will continue this morning over western Alaska. Moisture flowing out of Canada will push westward through the Fairbanks area, bringing a chance of showers to the western Interior. Rain and isolated thunderstorms will redevelop in Fairbanks this evening as clearing this morning. Highs will reach the 60s in the Interior with mostly to partly cloudy skies.

Two upper lows---one in the Bering Sea and another in the Eastern Gulf of Alaska---are keeping clouds and showers over the state. Because the Gulf low is vertically stacked to the surface, it has been mostly stationary. As a result, showers are still forecast for SE. Highs will reach the 50s to near 60.

Sunny skies will take hold for most of the Interior later this afternoon. Sufficient instability could lead to a late day shower or isolated thunderstorm over the mountains. These showers will be slow moving. If they do manage to make their way very far off the mountains, sprinkles are about all that most populated areas will see.

Partly to mostly cloudy skies in Southcentral could lead to few snow flakes or rain drops. A few echoes indicating light, isolated showers are showing up on radar imagery. The upper disturbance and cold front responsible for the clouds and spotty showers is, in general, moisture-starved. As a result, whatever precipitation falls in Alaska today will be light.

Alaska is void of any major weather systems. A weak upper jet associated with an even weaker shortwave trough near Southeast is drawing some moisture into southern AK. The SE Panhandle to PWS will see mostly cloudy skies and isolated showers. Temps will once again be mild with 40s to mid 50s.

Today will be a transition day for Southcentral. Increasing high clouds this morning, lowering clouds by afternoon, then isolated showers of rain and snow overnight will give way to a good chance of light showers by tomorrow. Temps will remain close to seasonal averages with highs generally in the low 40s. Seward is in for a gorgeous day---highs should top out in the low 50s.

Rain and snow will be confined to the extremities of the state as a high pressure ridge strengthens over the Beaufort Sea. Beneath and ahead of this upper ridge, sunshine will be widespread throughout Western, Interior, and Southcentral Alaska. Highs will be cool in the Interior, with teens to low 30s, and flat out cold to the north and west, where Nome will barely climb above 10 degrees, Kotzebue will stay in the single digits, and the Arctic Slope will remain below zero.

The primary weather feature today and for the weekend is a vertically stacked low pinballing around the Gulf of Alaska within an upper trough. It is not very strong to begin with and will only weaken as we go through the weekend. Therefore, while showers are likely in SE and parts of Southcentral in the coming days, heavy rain or snow is not a threat and winds will remain fairly tame.

Dry, arctic air continues to spill southward over the state ahead of and beneath a slow-moving upper ridge. Another day of bitter cold is in store for the North Slope and West. Air temperatures and wind chills will be close to where they were yesterday.

The large scale pattern has changed very little from yesterday. An upper ridge extends from the Beaufort Sea south over the Bering. Ahead of it in western Alaska, unseasonably cold cold and breezy weather continues. Wind chills have been as cold as 40 below near Bethel.

The weekend brought us hints of break-up in Anchorage, but don't get too used to it. While sunshine is still likely for a good part of the work week, temperatures a expected to remain very chilly for this time of year.

Just as happened yesterday morning, a relatively narrow band of moderate to heavy snow is streaming out of the Gulf into Southcentral today. Yesterday, this snow band moved over Turnagain Arm and directly into Anchorage. This morning, it has been moving over Seward, Kenai and Soldotna. Up to 6 inches will fall within this snow activity. Rain may mix with snow this afternoon in the eastern Kenai.

Anchorage is accumulating more snow at this hour. A persistent and intense band of snow developed along Turnagain Arm and moved up the Arm into Anchorage. Already, 1 to 5 inches has accumulated in the Anchorage metro area. Snow should taper off by noon. Light snow is possible through the afternoon.

An upper trough is digging in over the state. It will settle into Southwest Alaska tonight, then remain stationary through Friday. At the surface, a broad low complex will bring warmer air and snow showers across the coastal regions along the Gulf of Alaska. The ingredients are there for a return to more seasonable temperatures and snow through the week. However, snow is not expected to be heavy, as limited moisture will not support it.

The talk this morning is not about the weather---it's all about the sensational aurora that graced Alaskan skies last night. Even in urban areas, pale green striations were seen into the early morning hours.

A strengthening low moving north into the eastern Gulf has brought heavy rain and warm temperatures to Southeast. Up to 2 inches of rain through tonight is possible leading to localized flooding concerns. This low is headed due north toward the northern Panhandle, then will turn northeastward and exit into Canada tomorrow. However, a separate low in the southern Bering will quickly replace it.
