We've Turned The Corner

Easter Weekend turned into a great wrap-up to March, a month with just over 20 inches of snow and what seemed like a major setback with much of that total fallling just one week ago. Despite dense fog Sunday morning, temps warmed nicely and the meltdown ensued. It became nice enough in the afternoon for some to even wear shorts and t-shirts, if out for a short time.

This weekend may be gray, mild and occasional wet as a system takes the next three to four days to cross the Gulf of Alaska. For Friday through Sunday, many coastal communities will get periods of rain with highs of 44 to 49, while inland areas likely stay between 36 and 42.

A deep low pressure system has stalled out over eastern Russia. A frontal boundary is located over far NW Alaska. Rain, some of it heavy, has spread into Nome, Kotzebue, St. Lawrence Island and Wainwright. Winds will be strong near the front with gusts over 50 mph possible. The rawest conditions will be in the Chukchi Sea and Bering Strait. The low will remain stationary until Thursday night, so expect wet and windy weather until then.

July 23: Gloomy Weather Remains Until Mid-Week

Two main upper level features remain over the state. One upper low is centered near McGrath while another is weakening as it moves over the Aleutians. A stubborn status layer was once again observed overnight and this morning in Interior and Southcentral AK. This low cloud deck is breaking apart as the sun's influence becomes stronger. As pockets of sun get through to the surface, thermal mixing will further aid in breaking up the clouds. By tomorrow, a dry northerly flow aloft will develop and bring the promise of more sunshine and even warmer temps.

A ridge of high pressure is strengthening over the Gulf of Alaska. It will nudge into southern Alaska as the day goes on. While cool, moist air will endure through most of the morning, it will gradually be overtaken by the drier air and sunshine will begin to pop over much of the state's southern half.

Anchorage has surpassed a 57 year old record for snowfall in one season. The old record of 132.6 inches occured in 1954-1955. But with a total of 134.5 inches as of 4 p.m, Saturday, the winter of 2011-2012 is now the snowiest winter on record in Anchorage.

3.3 inches of snow are needed in Sand Lake to break the snow record. While snow, some of it moderate to heavy, will fall this morning into the afternoon, we will likely come up short of the record.

A low over the Lower Kuskokwim will move north today. Moisture to the east of the low and wrapping around it to the north is riding an upper jet, bringing rain and snow to a large chunk of the state.

Today will be a transition day for Southcentral. Increasing high clouds this morning, lowering clouds by afternoon, then isolated showers of rain and snow overnight will give way to a good chance of light showers by tomorrow. A upper ridge slowly gliding eastward over mainland Alaska is providing cool but sunny weather from the Western Interior to Southcentral. On the back of the ridge, strands of mid to high cloud cover with isolated flurries have increased along the the state's west coast.

April 2: Sunshine Will be Widespread Over the Great Land

Rain and snow will be confined to the extremities of the state as a high pressure ridge strengthens over the Beaufort Sea. Beneath and ahead of this upper ridge, sunshine will be widespread throughout Western, Interior, and Southcentral Alaska. Highs will be cool in the Interior, with teens to low 30s, and flat out cold to the north and west, where Nome will barely climb above 10 degrees, Kotzebue will stay in the single digits, and the Arctic Slope will remain below zero.

The primary weather feature today and for the weekend is a vertically stacked low pinballing around the Gulf of Alaska within an upper trough. It is not very strong to begin with and will only weaken as we go through the weekend. Therefore, while showers are likely in SE and parts of Southcentral in the coming days, heavy rain or snow is not a threat and winds will remain fairly tame.

Rain and snow showers remain over the southern and western parts of the state thanks to a low pressure area in the southern Bering, just west of Bristol Bay. Flow around the low is drawing moisture out of the Gulf of Alaska into southern Alaska.

An area of low pressure is situated near the Pribilofs this morning. Showers along the frontal boundary are slowly pushing through the Alaska Peninsula toward the shores of Bristol Bay and the Kuskokwim. Snow Band Misses Anchorage to the South Today

Just as happened yesterday morning, a relatively narrow band of moderate to heavy snow is streaming out of the Gulf into Southcentral today. Yesterday, this snow band moved over Turnagain Arm and directly into Anchorage. This morning, it has been moving over Seward, Kenai and Soldotna. Up to 6 inches will fall within this snow activity. Rain may mix with snow this afternoon in the eastern Kenai.

Anchorage Approaches the Snow Record for One Season

Anchorage is accumulating more snow at this hour. A persistent and intense band of snow developed along Turnagain Arm and moved up the Arm into Anchorage. An upper trough is digging in over the state. It will settle into Southwest Alaska tonight, then remain stationary through Friday. At the surface, a broad low complex will bring warmer air and snow showers across the coastal regions along the Gulf of Alaska. The ingredients are there for a return to more seasonable temperatures and snow through the week. However, snow is not expected to be heavy, as limited moisture will not support it.

Morning Fog Burns off Revealing Bright Sunshine

A strengthening low moving north into the eastern Gulf has brought heavy rain and warm temperatures to Southeast. Up to 2 inches of rain through tonight is possible leading to localized flooding concerns. This low is headed due north toward the northern Panhandle, then will turn northeastward and exit into Canada tomorrow. However, a separate low in the southern Bering will quickly replace it.
