UNION CITY, N.J. (PIX11)—A 56 year old Union City man has been arrested in his mother's death after police found his 91-year-old mother slumped over in a recliner, tied to the chair.
Peter Schnabel faced a judge Monday on elder neglect charges for his mother's Mildred's death early Saturday. Police say he returned to the 35th Street home he shared with his mother after working a night shift as a security guard for the Securitas Company in Jersey City. The man called 911 and was instructed in performing C.P.R., but his mother could not be revived.
Outside court today in Jersey City Schnabel had little to say.
"Of course I feel bad, but you can talk to my lawyer," said Schnabel when asked about his mother's death.
Schnabel, a father of two, was released on his own recognizance. His attorney Anthony Carbone insists this was no crime, only that he's lived with his mother his entire life and has been her sole caregiver as well.
"He's devastated. He cared for her every day of her life, he cooked for her, he changed her diapers he did everything," said Carbone.
Long time neighbors say they hadn't seen Mildred walking the neighborhood in years, and were shocked to hear her son was accused in his mother's death; fellow seniors were saddened that she died alone, allegedly tied up in her own home.
"She should have been put into a home if she needed assistance. Oh that's terrible, that ugly," said Vinnie Cocca as he did some landscaping work around his home just a few doors down from the Schnabel home.
The medical examiner has yet to rule on a cause of death.
