( Photo courtesy of FlickrHivemind.net / July 20, 2012 ) Believe it or not, a particular specimen of this fungus in the Malheur National Forest of Oregon has been found to be both one of the largest and longest living organisms in history. With a mycelium that spreads for miles from beneath the ground, the entire organism covers an area of 3.4 square miles, and has been estimated to have been growing for about 2,400 years. Despite that, the only parts of it that can be seen from above ground are its "honey mushrooms" that blossom each autumn. |
