ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU) - The University of Alaska Board of Regents has named the interim president of the university Tuesday. After five finalists were announced July 10, the former Vice Chancellor of Administration at the University of Alaska Fairbanks, Pat Pitney has been selected.

Pitney is the director of the Division of Legislative Finance and was the state budget director under Gov. Bill Walker.

The university says Pitney spent 23 years in positions at UAF and UA Statewide. Pitney will be stepping into the position on Aug. 1. Michelle Rizk has been serving as acting president of the university since former President Jim Johnsen stepped down on July 1.

Four other finalists — all with ties to the university — were considered for the position including two UA chancellors. Rizk, the vice president of University Relations, was also considered for the position.

The Board of Regents said Pitney is expected to hold the position of interim president for at least a year or as much as 18 months so that an appointment can be made for president.
