ANCHORAGE (KTUU) - Former Yukon Quest champion Sebastian Schnuelle lost two members of his dog team earlier this week after the team was hit by a vehicle during a road crossing.

In a Facebook post, Schnuelle said the team was crossing Chena Hot Springs Road when the vehicle ran “right through the middle of the team at full highway speed.”

“Cash died shortly after the accident, Jag could not be saved by the vets,” Schnuelle wrote. “Miraculously, Brock, Ozzy, Goblin, Big Mike, Dredge, Zipper all ran home on their own mostly uninjured.”

Schnuelle said the crossing is well marked and the first three pairs of his dogs were wearing LED collars.

“The gang will never be the same…” Schnuelle said.

According to the Iditarod website, Schnuelle is a German-Canadian musher from Whitehorse, Yukon. He won the 1,000 mile Yukon Quest in 2009 and placed second in the Iditarod later that year.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates.
