ANCHORAGE (KTUU) - A young child has died from injuries sustained in a car crash Tuesday night at the intersection of Lake Otis and O'Malley Road, police said.
Police were informed of the incident just before 8:30 p.m. on Jan. 16, responding to the area to do traffic control.
Two vehicles collided with one another in the South Anchorage intersection.
According to police, witnesses and scene evidence indicated that a Ford Explorer was headed east on O’Malley and made a left turn to go north on Lake Otis.
At the time the SUV made the turn, police say, the light was flashing yellow. A Honda Accord traveling west on O'Malley drove straight through the intersection on a green ball. That's when, police say, the two vehicles collided.
In a community alert, police said that one of the passengers in the Honda passed away just before 7 the following morning.
The passenger who died was just seven years old, police say. The child was first transported to the hospital, but died from injuries that were initially called "life-threatening."
The three other occupants of the Honda also sustained injuries; however, they were not life-threatening.
Police say no citations or charges were issued or filed in the investigation, so far. The investigation is on-going.
