ANCHORAGE, (KTUU) - Anchorage Police Department (APD) says people who have already paid for traffic citations may have gotten a reminder to pay them by mistake. They say a technical glitch is impacting tickets given out between November 2018 and April 2019.
APD says a data system which shares information between them, the Department of Public Safety (DPS), and the courts is supposed to send out traffic citation payment reminders to those who did not pay or contest their tickets within a month of getting them. But for some reason those reminders stopped and then just recently started again. They say if you’ve already paid or contested your ticket, disregard the reminder. But if you got a ticket in the last several months and haven't paid it, you're still on the hook.
In the release sent out Tuesday morning, APD also reminded ticketed drivers that their fine amounts may have also been mistakenly posted in digital form as lower in cost than they should be. They advise drivers that the correct fine dollar amount will be on the original ticket issued by the police officer. Fine amounts went up in January.
