Aklestad and Johnson grab Iron Dog lead at Kaltag checkpoint

Iron Dog teams prepare to leave Big Lake.

MCGRATH, Alaska (KTUU) - Defending champions Tyler Aklestad and Tyson Johnson are back in first place at the Kaltag checkpoint with a time of 14:51:00.

Tuesday night the leaderboard at 10:14 looks like this: (1.) Team #8 (2.) Team #16 (3.) Team #49 (4.) Team #36 (5.) Team #7.

Earlier this morning, Team #16 Todd Minnick and Nick Olstad ran into some trouble leaving the McGrath checkpoint.

“Gas pumps down,” said Nick Olsatd.

Weather - well below zero - had frozen the gas pump, which delayed Minnick and Olstad leaving McGrath.

Officials say the team had a 19 minute delay. And whether Team #16 gets the time back is a decision for the Iron Dog Race Marshal.

Other teams said it was nice getting to McGrath, after early technical terrain on the trail out of Big Lake.

“It’s always good to see the lights of McGrath, after a long day of bumps,” said Jason Gunderson Team #28.

Teams will begin leaving early this morning and make their way towards Nome. But they still have one more 8-hour layover, before arriving there.
