ANCHORAGE (KTUU) - A search and rescue launched Saturday after a skier was overtaken by an avalanche, troopers say.

Troopers in Seward received a report around 6:00 p.m. that Jeffery Cheng, 33, was skiing with two friends near the Crescent Lake Saddle Cabin.

According to the online report from AST, his friends, Bryce Fischer, 27 and Cody Lourie,33, recovered Cheng from 6 ft of snow-cover.

They performed CPR for 30 minutes. Troopers say Fischer left to get cell service and call for help.

The dispatch report says the US Forest Service, Alaska State Troopers, and Moose Pass EMS responded with snowmachines and at about 10:15 p.m. Cheng was found dead

Troopers reported that Cheng was snowboarding, but a friend who is close to the family said Cheng was skiing. The story has been updated to reflect this.
