Alaskans earn medals in Austria at World Special Olympics

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU) Alaskans tend to shine the brightest in winter sports, and the 2017 Special Olympics World Winter Games is no exception.

The games are taking place in Austria this year, and already Alaskans will be taking home some hardware.

Madison Englund of Fairbanks took home gold in Snowboarding Advanced Super G.

Jennifer Troutman of Anchorage finished in second in Alpine Skiing Advanced Super G final, earning a silver medal.

Troutman will compete in the Alpine Skiing Advanced Giant Slalom Final on Tuesday.

Englund will compete in the Snowboarding Advanced Giant Slalom Final, also on Tuesday.

Special Olympics Alaska President and C.E.O. Jim Balamaci says the athletes are having a great time, " Austria has gone way beyond all our expectations. Our athletes are having a great experienced competing and meeting fellow athletes from all over the world."
