Alaska's Olympic skiers compete in first medal event

ANCHORAGE (KTUU) - Three Alaskan skiers for Team USA and one for Team Australia competed in the first women's cross-country skiing gold-medal event early Saturday in Pyeongchang.

The Skiathlon, a one-and-done event, was won by Sweden's Charlotte Kalla with a time of 40:44.9. Norway's Marit Bjoergen, the Olympic defending champion, took silver, and Krista Parmakoski of Finland took the bronze. Team USA's highest-finisher was Jessica Diggins at 5th place, 14.7 seconds behind the leader.

Caitlin Patterson took the highest place among Alaska-connected skiers, and second among Americans, at 34th in the 15-kilometer skiathlon, which has skiers go 7.5k freestyle, and 7.5k classic. Patterson's time was 3:30.0 back from the leader.

Five-time Olympian Kikkan Randall came in at 40th place. Jessica Yeaton, who skis with Alaska Pacific University, and is at the Olympics representing Australia, was 50th.

Alaska’s Rosie Brennan finished in 58th place, 6:51.1 behind the leader.
