ANCHORAGE (KTUU) - With PM 2.5 particulate levels in the "Unhealthy" range, the Mat-Su Borough School District and the Anchorage School District called off all after school activities including the scheduled football games.
Air quality at the Department of Environmental Conservation site in Butte had a reading of 152 as of 1:30 p.m. on Friday. 151-200 are considered "Unhealthy" levels as per the Environmental Protection Agency's standards.
Anchorage School District has canceled all outdoor activities scheduled for today, Friday, Aug. 23. The district says that any practices that can be moved indoors will be, and all other practices have been moved to Saturday, Aug. 24. Potential cancellations on Saturday will continue to be assessed. In addition to football games, the Mustang Smokin' Stampede cross country running race is scheduled for Saturday.
The Anchorage Health Department issued an Air Quality Health Advisory through Aug. 25, advising those who are sensitive to air pollution to remain indoors and all residents to avoid strenuous exercise and exertion.
