ANCHORAGE (KTUU) - The National Hockey League named Anchorage’s Autumn Makar the Most Valuable Hockey Mom. The first-time campaign celebrated Mother’s Day, and the sacrifices that hockey moms make across the United States.

“It’s very humbling,” said Makar over the phone Monday.

Makar works full-time for a pharmaceutical company in addition to taking care of her full-time duties as a hockey mom. This season she took care of five hockey players, two of her own, and housed three other players from Michigan, Russia and Delta Junction.

Makar’s sons are goalies for the Alaska Oilers and All-Stars youth hockey teams.

“It sort of becomes a lifestyle,” said Makar. “The hockey community in Alaska is amazing, it really does take the support of all of the people around you to make it work because we do have such crazy schedules.”

The NHL said Makar went as far converting her dining room into a bedroom to accommodate extra players.

Makar learned to love the hockey lifestyle after her kids began playing.
Her husband Mike Makar was apart of the U.S. Ski Team, and her mother started Arctic Gymnastics in Anchorage. Both grew up in homes accustomed to housing other athletes.

The NHL is sending Makar and a guest on a 3-night trip to the NHL awards in Las Vegas.
