Bethel homeless shelter searches for new home before winter

BETHEL, Alaska (AP) A homeless shelter in Bethel is searching for a new facility before the arrival of winter, which can be deadly for the homeless population in Alaska.

KYUK-AM reported on Friday that the Winter House has located an emergency location, but program officials say the spot is less than ideal as they're seeking a more permanent facility somewhere in the city's downtown.

The shelter previously rented space form the Salvation Army, but its outpost closed earlier this year causing the shelter to lose its home.

Shelter President Jon Cochrane says he and other board members are reaching out to local government officials and community leaders for help in locating a space.

Cochrane says the shelter plans to find a way to open by December.
