ANCHORAGE (KTUU) - Summer skating season kicked off Saturday with a skate jam in front of Blue and Gold Board Shop, getting the community stoked on Anchorage's newest skate park.
Big improvements are in the works for Taku Lake Park, including a full revamp of the skate park. Members of the local skateboarding community say in its current state, the skate park is run down and outdated.
A representative from Grindline Skateparks, the company hired to do the renovations, was on hand at Blue and Gold Board Shop Saturday to take input from the community on what the new skate park should look like. Owner of the skate shop, Jason Borgstede, said he hopes the community can see the value in doing something positive for our youth.
"That's not just going to be a place to get kids out of your hair now. It's going to pay dividends in the future. The rough things that Anchorage is experiencing right now with drugs, and other issues like that — to give our kids a positive place to go express themselves, build confidence and learn how to develop a skill set, and be active, I don't think we could possibly overvalue that."
Planning is in the works now, and park officials hope to begin construction on the renovations by summer of 2021.
