KODIAK, Alaska (KTUU) - Last month, a group of three hunters reportedly went on a bear hunting trip to Sturgeon Lagoon on Kodiak Island. Weeks later, one man was found dead, and investigators are trying to find out what happened to him.

Viacheslav Akimenko, a 39-year-old man from Delta Junction, flew out on the hunting trip on April 28, along with Aleksandr Neverov, age 33, also from Delta Junction, and Mikhail “Mike” Malyk age 30, from Palmer.

When Neverov and Malyk decided to go home early, Alaska State Troopers say Neverov decided he "wanted to stay and finish the hunt." On the morning of May 8, when the plane came to pick the men up, they stated: "Akimenko had left that morning on a hike and had not returned."

AST says that, on May 13, they learned Neverov had found Akimenko and reported that he was dead. Troopers came to the area to investigate the case, and are still investigating according to a dispatch report.

Akimenko's remains were recovered and eventually sent to the Medical Examiner for an autopsy.
