Anchorage man awaiting trial for 2017 killing dead from apparent suicide
Chaz A. Shanigan, an inmate who was charged with murder in 2017 and being housed at the Anchorage Correctional Center, died on Saturday from an apparent suicide according to the Alaska Department of Corrections.
DOC spokesperson Sherrie Dagle said Shanigan, 22, was found unresponsive in his cell Friday.
"Facility staff immediately began attempting lifesaving measures and continued until emergency services arrived," Dagle wrote in a DOC release. Shanigan was taken to Alaska Regional Hospital but later died from his injuries.
Shanigan had been at ACC since March 9, 2017, where he was awaiting trial on charges of Murder 1, Murder 2, Robbery 1 and Misconduct involving weapons.
