Channel 2's Blake Essig sat down with U.S. Ambassador to China Terry Branstad, who talks about Alaska's efforts to increase trade with China. Branstad himself championed similar efforts in Iowa in the 1980s.
Gov. Bill Walker finished the 10-day Alaska trade mission to China on Wednesday with a meeting among reporters and many of the participants in a state conference room in downtown Anchorage.
Seafood is Alaska's largest commodity, and China is the state's largest trading partner. In 2017, the Alaska Office of International Trade reports Alaska exported about a billion dollars worth of seafood to China, a figure Gov. Bill Walker would like to triple.
A non-stop flight from Anchorage to Beijing will take you about 7 1/2 hours. At this point, however, that commercial flight doesn't exist. Instead, it can sometimes take twice as long to make the trip from Alaska.
A liquefied natural gas pipeline through Alaska has been talked about for decades, and while some have called the project a pipe dream, the proposal continues to gain traction as the result of a relatively new partnership forged between Alaska and China.
China is Alaska's top trade partner. In 2017, Alaska exported $1.32 billion in goods to the country, or about 26 percent of Alaska's total exports to the world market valuing $4.93 billion.
Gov. Bill Walker and the Opportunity Alaska trade delegation attended the 4th annual China-U.S. Governors' Forum, where the focus of discussion was economic innovation, environmentally friendly development, and international trade. (May 23, 2018)
