The Coast Guard and Sitka Mountain Rescue say they called off a search overdue kayaker near Sitka around 3:30 p.m. on Monday.

According to the Coast Guard, 36-year-old Kale Pastel was reported missing Sunday after not returning from an early morning kayaking trip to Birdsnest Bay.

The Coast Guard says a kayak was found overturned and adrift in Eastern Channel. A good Samaritan allegedly located the kayak and towed it to Cannon Island, where it was spotted by a helicopter crew from Coast Guard Air Station Sitka around 1:15 Sunday afternoon.

The Coast Guard deployed a helicopter while Sitka Mountain Rescue sent out three boats to the scene, but around 3:25 p.m., they called off the search.

Alaska State Troopers say next of kin has been notified.
