UPDATE: Evacuations now mandatory for fire in Sunshine

UPDATE: 7:00 p.m.:

One structure has been lost and the fire is now at roughly 60 acres, moving uphill.

A helitac and Heavy Air Scoopers are being used to fight the fire from above.

From the ground, hotshot and type 2IA crews are on scene, with smoke jumpers on the way from Talkeetna Airport. JBER Taskforce is also on scene.

The Red Cross Evacuation Center is now set up.

UPDATE: 5:30 p.m.:

The Division of Forestry has issued a level 3 evacuation order. Evacuations are now mandatory in the fire on Malaspina Loop.

DOF says the fire is heading north. Residents on West Montana Creek Rd., and South Malaspina Loop are to evacuate to the Upper Susitna Senior Center, located at 16463 E Helena Dr.

Crews from the Alaska Division of Forestry and the Mat-Su Borough are responding to a fire started near South Malaspina loop. Nearby neighborhoods in the Sunshine area should prepare for possible evacuation.

The Upper Susitna Senior Center, located at 16463 E Helena Dr., is being prepared by the Red Cross and CERT Team for possible evacuation of the area, according to Mat-Su Borough Acting Public Affairs Director, Stefan Hinman.

Hinman says the fire is currently at about three acres.
