ANCHORAGE (KTUU) - The team formerly known as the Alaska Aces will be moving and changing its name, according to Comcast Spectacor, the parent company of Spectra and the Philadelphia Flyers.
The team will reportedly be moving to Portland, Maine, under a new name that has not yet been determined. They will be a new ECHL affiliate, but may not be under the Flyers.
"It's true, they're moving," Ike Richman, a media contact for the company, said Thursday.
Philadelphia Flyers President Paul Holmgren will serve as the team’s governor, and former Flyer Danny Briere will oversee the day-to-day operations of the new hockey club.
“We are excited to reignite the hockey tradition in Portland,” Holmgren said in a statement released by Comcast Spectacor.
The team’s relocation to Portland will result in 36 home dates in the regular season.
Richman said in an email that Spectra also provides venue management to the Alaska Airlines Arena at University of Anchorage.
