ANCHORAGE (KTUU) - While under sunny skies Friday in Anchorage we will see a high near 12 degrees.
Strong mountain gap winds continued last night from cold air and storm energy moving from north to south as well as from storms in the northern Gulf continuing to pull on the high pressure in the Interior. As that storm energy shifts, and moves out of the east instead of the north combined with less pull on the nearby systems, this should allow our winds to start to relax by early Friday morning. Storms moving east to west through the Gulf will help to enhance snow fall across the Gulf and over Kodiak Island through Friday night. Snowfall will intensify late Friday in Kodiak as storms develop in the central Gulf and move north towards the island. Flow out of the east will bring warmer air to Kodiak as well as 40 mph wind gusts, plus heavy snow at times in Kodiak through Saturday morning.
This warmer air flow could turn that snow into a rain snow mix as warm air moves into the inland areas of Kodiak after a few inches of snow fall in Kodiak (Winter Storm Watch through Saturday Morning in Kodiak due to snow and blowing snow potential). The rest of Southcentral will remain clear and cold through Saturday. Clouds and the chance for snow will be on the increase along the coast and across the southern Copper River Basin on as some storm energy lifts northwest from the Alaska Panhandle.
For the extended period, a pattern shift should already be taking place by this time. Storms will be stretching across the Bering Sea from Eastern Siberia all the way down into the Gulf of Alaska. This means generally active weather for our forecast area to start off the week as storms push towards the mainland from the Bering and further east into the Panhandle.
Sunny in Anchorage on Friday while we warm to near 12 degrees for a high. Mostly clear skies Friday night as we drop down to -5 below zero along with 15 mph winds out of the north.
Mostly sunny skies in Anchorage on Saturday with a high of just 13 degrees. Partly cloudy skies Saturday night with a low of -8 degrees below zero.
Looking ahead, Sunday we will be under partly sunny skies with a high of 7 degrees.
