BUTTE, Alaska (KTUU) - A racecar driver is expected to make a full recovery after he was injured in a multi-vehicle crash at the Alaska Raceway on Saturday.

“We had a couple cars get tangled up going into turn one,” said raceway operations manager Michelle Maynor. “One of them unfortunately hit corner one a little hard so we had to have emergency crews respond.”

The crash happened during a three day racing event for Memorial Day weekend. The injured driver, Kevin Hamilton, suffered a bad concussion and was taken to Mat Su Regional Hospital. According to a post from his wife, the impact was enough to crack Hamilton’s helmet all the way through.

Maynor says Hamilton’s safety equipment did exactly what it was supposed to do, and emergency crews were able to respond to the crash very quickly. Hamiton is expected to be released from hospital as early as Sunday.

“He’s a very experienced driver he just was in the wrong place at the wrong time,” Maynor said.
