ANCHORAGE (KTUU) - There are a handful of events and ceremonies happening around Southcentral Alaska Monday to honor local veterans and active service members. Below is a shortlist of some of the things going on around your local area.
JBER Veterans Day Ceremony
The Alaska Department of Military and Veterans Affairs is hosting a Veterans Day Ceremony at the Alaska National Guard armory. The ceremony will include an opening medley by Glacier Brass, presentation of the colors by the Alaska Military Youth Academy, the president’s proclamation, recognition of the 2019 Governor’s Veterans Advocacy Award recipient, a Fallen Warrior Ceremony with a joint force Honor Guard, presentation of wreaths, and other ceremonial activities. JBER-Richardson gate access will open at 9 a.m.
Bean’s Café is holding its annual Veteran’s Day lunch beginning at Noon.
UAA Alumni Association Veterans Day event
The UAA Alumni Association will host a special Veterans Day event to show appreciation to veterans and active service members. Partnering organizations include the Alaska Army National Guard, UAA Staff Council, UAA Military and Veteran Student Services, Student Veterans of UAA, Alaska Airlines Center/Spectra and UAA Athletics. Monday, Nov. 11, 9:45-11:45 a.m. Alaska Airlines Center, third-floor balcony. Parking is free in the main Alaska Airlines Center lot.
Veterans Day Luncheon at APU
Alaska Pacific University is hosting its 11th annual Veterans Day Luncheon. Founded in 2009 by Harry Kachline, the Veterans Day Luncheon aims to bring our community together to share a meal while honoring those who have served or are currently serving in the armed forces. Active duty members and veterans may invite their families to attend the gathering. There is no cost to attend this luncheon. Veterans Day Lunch
Denali Federal Credit Union is hosting a free Veterans Day luncheon held at the American Veterans (AMVETS) Post 2 location in Anchorage. The luncheon will take place on Monday, November 11th from 11 am to 1 pm and is open to all active military and veterans (must have valid Military VA or ID.) Veterans Day at Post 28
This Veterans Day, come join friends, family, veterans, active-duty personnel, Legionnaires, Auxiliary, Sons of the Legion, and guests at Post 28 as they celebrate and honor those who have and who continue to stand as the defenders of our republic. Post 28 will retire flags at 1 p.m. and then the grill will be fired up and members will be bringing pot luck. The event location is 7001 Brayton Dr, Anchorage, Alaska, 99507.
WASI Veterans Day ceremony in Wasilla
WASI team up with the Quilts of Honor Foundation for our 2019 Veterans Day ceremony on Monday, November 11 at 11:00 am. The event location is 1301 S. Century Cir, Wasilla, Alaska, 99654.
Matanuska- Susitna College Veterans Day ceremony in Palmer
Matanuska- Susitna College, The Glenn Massay Theater, and Mat-Su Middle College School are hosting an event to honor local veterans. The event starts at 12 p.m. at the Glenn Massay Theater in Palmer.
Mat-Su Regional Medical Center
Mat-Su Regional salutes physicians, employees and volunteers who have served or are serving our country.
The center is holdin ga community-wide reception 3-4 p.m. Monday, November 11 in the main lobby.
Veterans Day dinner at Post 15
American Legion Post 15 is hosting an early bird dinner Monday night. The event starts at 6 p.m. and goes till 8 p.m. The address for the dinner is 1550 S. Mystic Cir, Palmer, Alaska, 99645. All 2020 membership cardholder eat free. All others the cost is $12.00.
