ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU) On a mission to bring families together and end violence, residents gathered in Mountain View for family day Saturday.
Sponsored by the North Anchorage Supreme Parenting Group, which members say formed last year in response to an increase in community violence — families were able to write messages on the sidewalk, enjoy summer staples and connect with neighbors.
"I think it's a really closed off neighborhood and I think there's a lot of situations that keep people locked into this neighborhood and they forget the opportunity and resources they have," Tavi Hamilton-Oches, a Mountain View resident and parent said.
"By coming together at a time of peace and relaxation we get to talk and see what we have to offer each other," she said.
the parenting group says it hosts similar events at least once a month---to encourage community engagement.
