ANCHORAGE (KTUU) — The sounds of cheering fans rang out at the Alaska Airlines Center Wednesday as the March Madness State Tournament got underway.

High school basketball teams from across Alaska are competing this week.

It was the first time the Savoonga Boys 1A team made it to the state tournament.

"So this is historical for us," said Savoonga fan Yaari Walker. "It's so exciting."

Savoonga played against Thorne Bay in the second game of the tournament.

"It's been incredible," said Thorne Bay fan Amy Jennings. "I think the last time Thorne Bay went to state was 1990 or something."
