There are a number of festive holiday events going on in Southcentral Alaska. Here are some of them:
Zoo Lights at The Alaska Zoo
When: Opening Night Friday, Nov. 24, 5 - 8 p.m.; Thursdays thru Sundays, Nov. 24 - Jan 28, but 7 days a week Dec. 17 - Jan. 7, except Christmas Day; Thursdays thru Sundays, Feb. 1 - March 4, 6:30 - 8:30 p.m.
Where: The Alaska Zoo
Custom light displays line our zoo trails in the darkness of the Alaskan winter. Animal-themed displays, animated displays set to music, canopies of light over some trails, a lit up playground and lots of fully lit trees.
$6 per person for zoo members, $8 per person non-members, ages 2 and under free
When: Fridays thru Sundays, Nov. 24 - Dec. 23, 1 - 8 p.m., Christmas Eve 1 - 4 p.m.
Where: Camp Gorsuch – 22700 Camp Gorsuch, Chugiak
Christmas Towne, Alaska converts the Boy Scout camp in Chugiak into a Christmas lit village for the holidays. Its goal is to give families and children the opportunity to make treasured Christmas memories. Come spend an hour making Santa’s favorite Christmas treat with Mrs. Claus in the kitchen, spend 30 minute hand-painting handprint ornaments with Santa Claus himself. Admission is free, crafts are for purchase.
Winter Solstice Festival
When: Thursday, Dec. 21, 5 - 8 p.m.
Where: Cuddy Family Midtown Park
A free event featuring: holiday music, hot chocolate, sleigh rides and skating on the Oval.
Christmas on the (Reindeer) Farm
When: Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 23 - 24, 12 -5 p.m.
Where: Williams Reindeer Farm – 5561 S. Bodenburg Loop Rd. Palmer
Christmas on the Farm includes Santa, a reindeer tour, an indoor snowball fight, tractor-pulled wagon rides (if the temperature is above 0 degrees), a bonfire, and reindeer sled rides (if above 0 degrees and not too slippery), reindeer train (also above 0 degrees) and crafts for kids.
Admission $9 per person ages 3 and up
