Update: 5:32 p.m.
Traffic is being directed to the South Birchwood off ramps due to a fatal crash.

APD says a preliminary investigation found that two vehicles collided with each other and both ended up in the median. Both drivers exited their cars and began walking toward the edge of the highway when an oncoming vehicle lost control, hit the center median and struck one of the drivers of the original crash.

APD says multiple witnesses stopped and attempted lifesaving measures.

In video submitted to KTUU after emergency crews responded, more than a dozen vehicles can be seen either stopped in the roadway or in the median between north and southbound lanes.

Paramedics declared an adult female dead at the scene shortly after.

APD says traffic in both directions is being diverted via South Birchwood on-ramps.

The highway is expected to remain closed.
