ANCHORAGE (KTUU) - Teachers are emphasizing the importance of doing what you can to grab everything on that back to school supply list.
The Anchorage School District has a generic Elementary Student Supply List for parents to refer to, and many times teachers will send home a list of their own with students.
“It’s really important because we’re going to use it, and we’re going to go through it so quickly,” said first-year ASD kindergarten teacher Blake Baustista.
It will be Bautista’s first year in the classroom when students return to school in the fall. As a new instructor, she said she is planning on spending several thousands out of pocket for supplies in the classroom.
“I want to make sure they have as many supplies as they need to be successful in my classroom,” she said. “So I am spending a lot of my own money out of my paycheck.”
The National Center for Education Statistics reported that in 2018, of the teachers surveyed, 94 percent spent their own money on class supplies. The average amount spent a year was almost $500.
Which is why Bautista stresses the importance that parents do what they can to check the back to school list off.
“Even if it’s a pack of pencils, it’s one less pack of pencils that I have to purchase,” Bautista said.
Bautista recommends waiting until parents can check in with their children’s teacher before buying the bulk of their school supplies.
