ANCHORAGE (KTUU) - A fire this morning destroyed a home in Houston, and spread into the surrounding woods, according to the Houston Fire Department. One of the home’s two occupants was taken to the hospital for minor smoke inhalation.
The two-story home in the Prator Lake area was fully engulfed in flames by the time firefighters responded, at about 5:15. Houston Fire Chief Christian Hartley said between 20 and 30 firefighters from Houston Fire Department and neighboring Willow and West Lakes departments battled the fire. Both people who live in the home made it out.
The fire spread into the trees to what Hartley estimated to be 100 or 200 square feet. He said it’s a good reminder that even though it’s winter, black spruce and dry trees can still catch fire.
The person treated for smoke inhalation was taken to the hospital as a precaution, while the other person went to the hospital to be with them. A cat in the home has not been found.
