Iditarod Elementary teacher arrested for sexual abuse of a minor

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU) — An Iditarod Elementary School teacher was arrested by Wasilla police, charged with sexual abuse of a minor, after a report that a male teacher had inappropriately touched a student..

Lukis Nighswonger, 36, was charged with three counts of sexual abuse of a minor in the 2nd degree, all class B felonies.

According to the Wasilla Police Department, Nighswonger is being held at Mat-Su Pretrial Facility pending arraignment.

The arrest comes after the Mat-Su School District received a report that Nighswonger had allegedly touched a student inappropriately.

Mat-Su School District Superintendent Dr. Monica Goyette said in a statement Wednesday night that the school district is fully cooperating with the investigation, and that support for victims is the school district's highest priority.

Goyette says any concerns of harm should be taken directly to law enforcement.
