ANCHORAGE (KTUU) - Good news this morning: K-9 Midas is back home and recovering after a suspect with a sword attacked him earlier this week.

Anchorage Police said in a press release that "Midas is doing well and continues on his road to recovery."

APD Monday was called to Wildberry Loop after reports of a man brandishing a weapon. APD said the suspect, 38-year-old Kevin Phoummany, fired a shot at officers, then barricaded himself in his home.

After police used chemical agents, the man left the home then stabbed the K-9 officer with a sword, according to police.

A member of the SWAT team then shot Phoummany, who was pronounced dead at a hospital.
