ANCHORAGE (KTUU) - The last two Blockbuster stores in Alaska are closing, according to a post on the company's Facebook page.

Even after receiving a gift of movie memorabilia from Russell Crowe's career, through John Oliver's show, "Last Week Tonight," the Debarr road store in Anchorage and the College Road store in Fairbanks will be closing.

The two stores will close on Monday, July 16. On Tuesday, July 17 they will reopen for an inventory sale at noon through July and August.

"These are the last two Blockbuster stores in Alaska that survived and it is sad to say goodbye to our dedicated customers," said a post co-signed by Kelli Vey, District Manager, and Kevin Daymude, General Manager.

The statement says both Vey and Daymude have been with the company since 1991.

"Thank you for sticking by us throughout all these years. I can't tell you how much it means to us."

In an interview Thursday, Daymude said many customers had called or stopped by to say they'll miss their local Blockbuster.

"We have a great customer base," he said, "and it kills us to tell these customers that we're having to close down.

"One customer called up on the phone and said, 'This is a lie, this can't be happening! I want to talk to Kevin (Daymude) personally because we can't have this happen.'"

The store also posted a video of two people carrying a candle and setting it in front of the store. "Last two Blockbusters in Alaska are closing. It's a sad day for us." it read.
