Lyutyik, the well-loved polar bear at the Alaska Zoo, isn't doing too well

ANCHORAGE (KTUU) - The Alaska Zoo says 19-year-old Lyutyik, the zoo’s well-known and loved polar bear, is not feeling so good.

The zoo says Lyutyik was moved from his usual habitat for monitoring and treatment of an unknown medical condition.

He has been at the zoo since 2006.

The zoo says it started to notice something off about "Louie" when he started showing symptoms like lethargy and loss of appetite. For the past few months, a dedicated team of veterinary specialists has been trying to get Lyutyik back to his polar bear self.

This isn't the first time the polar bear has been ill. Back in February of 2018 veterinarians found an abscess along his right inside elbow.

At the time, Patrick Lampi, the executive director of the Alaska Zoo, said he was treated on a wide spectrum of antibiotics.

The Alaska Zoo asks that "the community keep its 1,100-pound friend in their thoughts.”
