Making a big dent in the snow deficit

ANCHORAGE (KTUU) - The snow over the past week has made a huge difference in the snow deficit around Anchorage.

On Monday, Dec. 10, 2018, Anchorage was 19.4 inches below normal snow totals. As of Saturday morning, Anchorage is now just 6.5 inches below normal for the season.

Friday’s snow helped. The official measurement at the National Weather Service office in west Anchorage was 6.8 inches, putting the season total at 22.8 inches. Last year by this date, Anchorage only had 9.3 inches of snow.

There was a wide range of snow totals from Friday’s storm, from 2 to 8 inches. Here are a few of the estimated snowfall totals from NWS storm reports.

2 Miles SE of TSAIA: 8 inches
Seward/Tudor: 7.6 inches
Girwood: 7-8 inches
Turnagain Heights: 5 inches
Elmendorf AFB: 4 inches
Upper O’Malley Trailhead: 3.5 inches
Kenai: 3 inches
2 SE Eagle River: 2.5-3 inches
