ANCHORAGE (KTUU) - Fire crews have been able to get 20 percent containment of the Malaspina fire near Talkeetna, forestry officials say. The 85-acre fire has burned one structure and one outbuilding, according to a Tuesday update.
While evacuation orders have been rolled back, about 107 primary residences and outbuildings are still at Level 2 – which means residents should “get set.” Those homes are in an area between Montana Creek Road and Yoder Road, beyond Montana Creek.
Anyone who evacuates is asked to check in at the Upper Susitna Valley Senior Center at 16463 East Helena Drive in Talkeetna.
The nearby Montana Creek fire is at 36 acres and 30 percent contained, managers said. On that fire, about 170 primary residences and outbuildings are at a Level 1 – “Get Ready” evacuation notice.
That larger area covers many neighborhoods east of Montana Creek on Montana Creek Road and back to Big Mountain Drive toward Sheep Creek.
Both fires will be under the same fire command beginning Wednesday. Between the two fires, 153 firefighters are currently battling the two blazes.
Fire danger is still high in the area with hot and dry conditions, the Division says, as the state has banned all campfires and open burning across much of the state.
