ANCHORAGE (KTUU) - A man was discovered dead Friday morning, after he had been reported as a missing person days earlier.

Benjamin Knapp, 30, was found dead by searchers, his body submerged under 10 feet of water in Spenard Lake.

The case began Wednesday, when APD put out a bulletin regarding his missing status. He was last seen at 11 p.m. near the Lakefront Hotel on Spenard, where detectives believe he was walking towards Lake Spenard.

Lieutenant Joseph Gamache, with the Airport Police and Fire Department, said that he was seen swimming in Lake Spenard.

Officers searched for him, but did not find his body until Friday, about 600 feet to the northeast of the Lakefront Hotel, and 50 feet from the shoreline of the lake.

Airport police are now handing the death investigation back to APD, because they are the originating agency on the initial case of a missing person.

APD, in a statement, said that they believe alcohol to have been a factor in this case.
