ANCHORAGE (KTUU) - The Whittier Police Department has identified the man who fell to his death near the Winner Creek handtram in Girdwood as 57-year-old Jeffrey Hummel of Anchorage.

An investigation into the death revealed Hummel was helping other hikers cross the handtram when he fell about 50 feet. Hummel lost his balance while helping the hikers, and fell off the platform, missing the safety net.

After extensive work from Girdwood Fire and Rescue, Whittier Police and help from other volunteers that were present, they were able to get Hummel to the top of the trail. Unfortunately, due to the severity of the fall, Hummel was pronounced dead at the scene.

The State Medical Examiner’s Office was notified and Hummel's remains were transported for an autopsy to determine cause of death.
